This Spiral explores the evolution of plants, easily narrated in loose lines with four major evolutionary events:
- First plants on land,
- Vascular plants,
- Seed plants and,
- Flowering plants
Spiral II focuses on co-evolution. Many people have some notion of what natural selection means, and may associate it with climate and terrain conditions. In this piece, the role of other organisms in the evolution of every species is emphasized, showcasing the evolution of plants and some examples of co-evolution with vertebrates and arthropods. The animal branches intertwine with the flowering plant branch, and examples are lined vertically above each.

At Phipps, we were able to design a large exhibit in the beautiful space of the Gallery, ceeded by Phipps Conservatory. In this exhibit, we introduced visitors to the idea of artificial selection with a display of common vegetables in Veggie Variation and to the basic principles of inheritance with a series of planted Punnett squares in the Genetic Garden.
Detail of "Spiral of Life II." All livings things go-evolve with the organisms in their environment. The Tui bird has co-evolved with the red mistletoe, its beak can expertly open the explosive flowers of the plant.
